The Road to Mallorca heads to Sweden for a fifth consecutive year this week. Here’s all you need to know about the Dormy Open taking place at Upsala GolfKlubb, Uppsala, Sweden.
Road to Mallorca return
After a one-year hiatus, the Dormy Open returns to the Road to Mallorca schedule in what will be the fourth edition of the event since its inception in 2021. Four years ago, at Österåkers Golfklubb, Félix Mory claimed a maiden HotelPlanner Tour title after toppling Sweden’s Björn Hellgren and Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia in a three-way play-off. Back at the same venue 12 months later, Spaniard Emilio Cuartero Blanco produced an eagle and a birdie on two of his last three holes to finish one shot clear of Switzerland’s Jeremy Freiburghaus on 15 under par. During the 2023 edition, South African Jacques Kruyswijk sealed a breakthrough win after a weather-affected four days at Askersunds Golfklubb. Once Saturday’s play was suspended and with the tournament reduced to 54 holes, Kruyswijk returned to the course a day later to complete his final round, with a birdie-birdie finish sealing a nine under par victory.
First time venue
Upsala GK, located one hour north of Stockholm, will this week make its debut on the HotelPlanner Tour. The club’s 18-hole championship layout is regarded as Uppsala County’s finest and one of the best in Sweden. The course, built in 1937, was completely renovated between 2007-2010 and boasts a varied layout which includes long flat stretches mixed with hilly terrain. Slick and well-maintained greens also characterise this week’s venue, which has previously held the Women’s European Team Championships in 2020 and the Team Championships in 2021, where the hosts ran out victorious.
Jesper Svensson, who graduated from the HotelPlanner Tour in 2023 before winning the Porsche Singapore Classic on the DP World Tour the following year, is a member at Upsala and still supports to the flourishing junior section, which aims to provide a pathway for the country’s most promising talent.
Battle for points
Scotsman David Law and Frenchman Oihan Guillamoundeguy, Number One and Two on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, will both take this week off, giving those in pursuit the chance to make up ground. Italian Filippo Celli arrives in Sweden fresh off sealing a maiden HotelPlanner Tour victory at The Dutch Futures. The 24-year-old, who sits third on the Rankings, fired 13 birdies and two eagles during the weekend in the Netherlands to seal a two-stroke victory and looks best placed to take advantage of Law and Guillamoundeguy’s absence.
Celli’s countryman Renato Paratore is another who will be looking to build on a string of impressive performances. The 28-year-old, who is eyeing a third win of 2025, arrives in Uppsala fresh off a top ten finish in the Netherlands, where for a large period of Sunday’s final round he looked Celli’s main competition. Sitting sixth in the Rankings, another positive outing could see Paratore become the man to beat on the Road to Mallorca. Elsewhere, South African JC Ritchie will return to the course this week having taken a four-week break following his fifth HotelPlanner Tour victory at the German Challenge supported by VcG. Ritchie sits eighth in the Rankings and is eyeing a return to the DP World Tour, having lost his card in 2023.
