Rory McIlroy happy to head to Ryder Cup on a high after big finish at Wentworth

Rory McIlroy was pleased to finish his final competitive round before the Ryder Cup on a high after signing off with a birdie and an eagle in his last two holes at the 2025 BMW PGA Championship.

The reigning Masters Champion struggled over the first three days at Wentworth Club but was back to his brilliant best on Sunday as he fired a superb 65.

And he saved his best until last, holing from 35 feet for an eagle on the 18th to send the crowd wild.

That was his second eagle of the day after sending his approach at the long fourth to tap-in range, while he also made five birdies and two bogeys to finish the week on 12 under par.

The Northern Irishman, who will leave for New York with his European team-mates after the final round for a three-day scouting trip ahead of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage later this month, said: "I think you enjoy yourself a bit more when you play like that instead of the way I played the first three days.

"But yeah, I played the par fives much better. That was the difference between the first three days and today. I've played the par fives in six under, which I think got me back to under par for the par fives for the week.

"I played much better. And yeah, obviously a really nice way to sign off the week, last competitive round going into the Ryder Cup. So nice to finish on a high.

"I think we definitely are getting into Ryder Cup mode. We had a really good team dinner on Tuesday night with the caddies, and the wives and the partners were there as well. We're getting ready to go on this practice trip tonight to New York.

"There's been a lot of talk and a lot of chat and a lot of thinking about the Ryder Cup. But you still want to play well this week.

"I saw a glimpse of that. There was a lot of birdies and eagles and just a few too many bogeys and double bogeys to have a chance to win but overall, happy with the week and obviously very excited for what's to come in a couple of weeks' time."

McIlroy has enjoyed playing in front of loud crowds over the past two weeks, having tasted victory in dramatic fashion at last week's Amgen Irish Open before putting on a show at the season's third Rolex Series event on Sunday.

He will be hoping to keep the home fans nice and quiet when Luke Donald's Team take on the Americans in the biennial showpiece in just under two weeks' time.

"I'm trying to get the crowd to cheer here and I'm trying to keep them as quiet as possible over in the States," added McIlroy.

"It's a bit of a different thing. The crowds last week in Ireland and this week were amazing, even teeing off at 7.45 in the morning and seeing so many people lined in the first fairway.

"It's very cool to play in atmospheres like this, and it's one of the reasons why I love coming back here to play."

Rahm confident in Europe's chances at Bethpage

Europe team-mate Jon Rahm will also head to Bethpage in high spirits after closing out his week with a 66 that featured seven birdies.

With it, the Spaniard extended his run of under-par rounds to 15 across his four appearances at the BMW PGA Championship.

Rahm declared himself "very, very happy" with his final-day showing and is confident the European team head stateside full of belief they can land a rare away victory and first since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

"Well, wouldn't be the first time miracles happened twice," he said. "Got to have faith.

"I think we're playing good enough and we are a good and strong enough team to face what we are going to face at Bethpage and hopefully end up with the cup."
