BMW PGA Championship - Day two digest

Everything you need to know from day two at the third Rolex Series event of the year.

A Major Champion rose to the top of the leaderboard while Europe's Ryder Cup stars continued to put on a show on day two of the 2025 BMW PGA Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from day two at the third Rolex Series event of the year.

Chip-in eagle propels Matsuyama to the top

Hideki Matsuyama leads by one shot at the halfway stage after firing two extraordinary eagles in his second-round 64, but he has a world-class chasing pack lurking ominously behind him. The tournament debutant turned in 31 after making an eagle and two birdies on the front nine before a run of three gains in four holes after the turn catapulted him up the leaderboard. Matsuyama bogeyed the 15th following an errant tee-shot but bounced back in style with a chip-in eagle from long range on the 17th to take the outright lead on 12 under par. European Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose, Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland are just one shot back. We're in for an exciting weekend.

Hovland finishes with a flourish

Hovland saved his best until last once again as he fired an eagle on the 18th for the second day in succession. The Ryder Cup-bound Norwegian also made four birdies in a flawless second-round 66 to reach 11 under.

Saddier lands two eagles

Another man who made an eagle at the last on Friday was Adrien Saddier but that wasn't the only big bird on his card. The Frenchman, who is enjoying a wonderful season, also notched an eagle on the fourth courtesy of a delightful approach shot. He then holed a huge putt from the fringe at the last to head into the weekend on eight under.

McIlroy's brilliant burst of scoring

Masters Champion Rory McIlroy made a disappointing start to his second round, carding three consecutive bogeys from the third hole to drop back to level par for the tournament. But he bounced back in style, reeling off five birdies in seven holes around the turn. A double bogey on the 18th left a sour taste but last week's winner is safely through to the weekend.

Fleetwood makes the cut in style

Tommy Fleetwood had to battle hard to make the cut on Friday after his opening 73. And in a dramatic finish, he got the birdie he needed from seven feet on the 18th to make it through to the weekend. The home hero was roared on by his adoring fans throughout and they were delighted to see him get over the line. He said: "I ground it out, making the cut is always important. It gives you the chance to play two rounds at the weekend and see if we can work our way up the leaderboard. That's a nice feeling just to get that done in the end."
