If saving a par when bogey or worse appears a near certainty is one of golf's moral victories, then Matti Schmid just produced the perfect example.
During the first round at the BMW International Open, the German appeared in all heaps of bother after an errant tee shot left him in the 'jungle' 40 yards or so left of the fairway.
In truth, it was impressive he just found his ball.
From there, he mustered all his force to advance his second shot into a native area to the right of the fairway.
"I'm hoping that isn't out of the frying pan to the proverbial fire," was how Mark Roe described the predicament facing Schmid during the World Feed coverage.
Fortunately, he was unimpeded by the trees on the parkland layout at Golfclub München Eichenried and found the green, albeit leaving 28 feet for his par putt.
The World Feed commentary team of Alison Whitaker and Mark Roe were already calling "the par of the week" and Schmid duly sank his putt to the delight of the home crowds and perhaps incredulity of those in the commentary box.
"That should never be a par!" said Roe. "He's got to put a five down on the card, he's not allowed to put four."
But a par it was.
You'll do well to see many better during the rest of the season.
