US PGA Championship: Fantasy DP World Tour ones to watch

With Major season in full swing as the world's best gather for the US PGA Championship, here is all that players of the DP World Tour's official fantasy game need to know.

This is the second time the PGA of America’s premier event - one of golf’s four Major Championships - will be played at Quail Hollow Club on the heels of Justin Thomas winning in 2017.

Often regarded as the event to boast the strongest field in golf, the injured Billy Horschel is the only player in the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking set to miss out on teeing it up from the 156-strong field in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A month on from completing the career Grand Slam, Rory McIlroy - one of 55 DP World Tour members teeing it up - returns to a happy hunting ground for his latest tilt at Major glory, while World Number One Scottie Scheffler is another player in excellent form having won his first title of the season on the PGA TOUR ast month.

Xander Schauffele is the defending champion after he earned the first of two Major titles in 2024 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

From insight into the week’s most-picked players among Fantasy managers, to our ones to watch, we run the rule ahead of Thursday’s deadline to pick your team.

Who are the most backed players?

Unsurprisingly, the world's top two players are almost neck and neck when it comes to popularity among our Fantasy users this week. McIlroy just edges it over Scheffler, but it's by less than four per cent, featuring in 87% of teams compared with 84% for the American.

American Major Championship-winning pair Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau are third and fourth respectively, occupying a spot in 59% and 51% of team selections, respectively.

Despite missing the cut on his US PGA Champiopnship debut last year, Ludvig Åberg rounds out the top five as the Swede features in just shy of 49% of teams.

Who are our ones to watch?

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Rory McIlroy

With four wins and the course record, a 61 achieved in 2015, Quail Hollow holds many happy memories for the Northern Irishman. It is little wonder that Jordan Spieth referred to the venue of this week's championship as the "Rory McIlroy Country Club". Add in the fact he is no longer burdened by the pressure of trying to complete the career Grand Slam after his dramatic victory at the Masters Tournament and it is safe to say his confidence is going to be sky high. While far from his best at last week's Truist Championship, ordinarily held at Quail Hollow but instead move to Philalphia, he still finished in a tie for seventh. Already a three-time winner this year, the weather may even be on his side with rain forecast in the build-up, resulting in a softening to the course which would be to his benefit due to his length off the tee. And yet, despite all that, you could toss a coin between him and who most are viewing as the other stand-out favourite...

Form Horse - Scottie Scheffler

It says a lot about the levels to which the American has taken his game that a run of two top tens and two top 20s in four of his first five appearances this year was viewed as a slow start. Despite his delayed start to the season after injuring his hand cutting ravioli on Christmas Day, his consistency of performance has helped him become just the second player - after Tiger Woods - to amass 100 consecutive weeks or more at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking. He finished fourth on his Masters title defence last month, before racking up another top ten at the RBC Heritage a week later. His first win of the year came at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, where he dominated the field to finish at 31 under and win by eight shots. As such, it is fair to say he is dialled in as he goes in search of his third Major victory.

Wild Card - Ryan Fox

Now a PGA TOUR winner after winning the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic at the weekend, the New Zealander can enter this week with no pressure. Were it not for a chip-in to emerge from a three-way play-off, he would not be lining up at Quail Hollow. Across his six previous appearances at the US PGA Championship, he has struggled to produce the levels we know he is capable of but he did make the cut when the event was last held at the Charlotte venue. Back inside the world's top 100 at 71st, could he capitalise on the momentum he will bring over from South Carolina and play his way into contention for back-to-back titles?
