Tommy Fleetwood hunting dream win at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Tommy Fleetwood has just achieved one of golf's greatest feats and this week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship he is looking to tick off another and realise his dream of victory at The Old Course, St Andrews.

The Englishman claimed four points in pairings play before going down to a narrow singles defeat at Bethpage as Europe won the Ryder Cup on U.S. soil, with Fleetwood becoming one of just 47 Europeans to have that honour.

A few more than that have holed winning putts on the 18th green at the Old Course, St Andrews but a victory at the Home of Golf still stands out as one the biggest things you can do in the game.

Fleetwood has played in every edition of this event over the old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns since his debut in 2011 with two runner-up finishes, a further five top tens and just two finishes outside the top 25.

He also won the team event in 2019 with long-time amateur partner Ogden Phipps and now he has his eye on a long-awaited win under his own steam.

"I'm very excited," he said. "I've always loved coming back and I've played it for I don't know how many years now. I live close and I have a lot of friends that play this tournament. On top of that, the Old Course is one of the places we play. Like they are three of my favourite courses in the world.

"It's a great tournament and no matter whether it's a Ryder Cup year we play in or not, I always love coming back and I still dream of actually winning a tournament at the Old Course and being on that 18th green. It's just not happened yet."

Despite playing 90 holes of golf under extreme pressure and following that with an after-party less than 72 hours ago - although Fleetwood revealed he was not one of those going into the wee small hours - the 34-year-old is confident this week's atmosphere can keep him going physically and mentally.

"This week is such an enjoyable week," he said. "I feel like there's a lot of things this week that can reset you mentally.

"I'm not going to do very much physically the next few days. I'm tired. My body isn't feeling it that much. I have a lot of friends and there's great energy in that sense. I love coming here and having a good time.

"I hope that I can get to a straight start in the tournament and have a great chance this week and have another good week. So we'll see about that.

"I'm going to be here and I'm going to try my absolute hardest. Physically, I'm turning up here and I'm feeling really good and excited about playing golf. They are three great courses that I love playing with great friends, great people. There are a lot of things that are giving me energy and that's the stuff that I'm looking forward to."

Last week Fleetwood teamed up with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose as he won all of his points with a partner and moved to a remarkable 6-0-0 in foursomes.

Having come through the European amateur system rather than going the collegiate route, Fleetwood has played plenty of team golf and as he pairs up again with Phipps in Scotland, he revealed he relishes playing with a partner.

"I think having a team-mate definitely brings out the best version of yourself," he said.

"I just love being out there. I love the competition. I love having a partner, someone to lean on, and then I love being the one that someone might need to lean on as well. I think we all have that as the European Team. I think that's something that we just have so naturally. Team golf has been good to me."
