Subash Tamang set to make Nepal 120th nation represented on DP World Tour

Subash Tamang will make DP World Tour history on Thursday when he becomes the first Nepali player to tee it up on golf's Global Tour at the DP World India Championship.

In a season that has seen the DP World Tour welcome its first Rwandan, Bulgarian and Dominican golfers, Nepal becomes the 120th nation to be represented since 1972.

Nepal is home to just seven golf courses, including Royal Nepal Golf Club in Kathmandu, where Tamang first discovered the game.

“I was introduced to golf by my cousin’s son who was actually a spotter at the Royal Nepal Golf Club," he said. "Some members then brought me in as a spotter and then I picked up a club and started playing.

“I’ve played all seven courses in Nepal and my favourite is Royal Nepal Golf Club."

Tamang was the first golfer from Nepal to make the top 100 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking and is currently 1,716th in the paid ranks, with nine top tens in the past three seasons on the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India.

He made the cut earlier this season on the HotelPlanner Tour at the DP World PGTI Open and is hoping this week at Delhi Golf Club can be a stepping stone to the very top.

“I am very happy to be the first Nepali golfer on the DP World Tour, it’s very exciting to be here to represent my country," he said.

"I want to move up from the PGTI to the Asian Tour and then to the DP World Tour and PGA Tour. That’s my dream."

He will get his first professional start on the DP World Tour under way at 7.55am local time, alongside Indian duo Manoj S and Azhar Mohd.
