Ryder Cup trio Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry in marquee grouping at U.S. Open

Rory McIlroy will join Ryder Cup team-mates Justin Rose and Shane Lowry in a marquee grouping over the opening two rounds of the U.S. Open.

The all-European trio will feature as part of Thursday’s first-round morning wave for the third Major Championship of the season at Oakmont Country Club, beginning their challenges at 7:40am local time off the tenth tee.

McIlroy dramatically edged out Rose in a play-off to complete the career Grand Slam at the Masters Tournament in April, while fellow Major winner Lowry was runner-up the last time this event was played here in 2016.

Teeing off at 7:29am off the first, Bryson DeChambeau, who beat McIlroy to victory by one shot last year, is paired alongside Xander Schauffele and Jose Luis Ballester, continuing the annual tradition of grouping the defending U.S. Open champion with The Open and U.S. Amateur champions.

The stand-out group for Thursday afternoon sees Scottie Scheffler in the company of fellow American Collin Morikawa and Norway’s Viktor Hovland from 1:25pm off the first.

World Number One Scheffler is the pre-tournament favourite as he targets his fourth win in five starts, including a second Major triumph of the season after victory at last month’s US PGA Championship.

There will also be intrigue in the 1:14pm three-ball off the tenth as a trio of U.S. Open champions in Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson play together, with the latter the most recent winner at Oakmont nine years ago.
