Ryan Gerard joins Rico Hoey on top at Barracuda Championship

Ryan Gerard and Rico Hoey will share a one-point lead heading into the final round of the Barracuda Championship in California.

The Barracuda Championship is the only event on the PGA TOUR or DP World Tour schedule which uses the Modified Stableford scoring system, with players receiving two points for a birdie, five for an eagle and eight for an albatross, and deducted one point for a bogey and three for a double.

Hoey had led the way on his own after two days after back-to-back rounds of 13 points but his eight-point effort at Tahoe Mountain Club on Saturday left the door open for the chasing pack.

And when Gerard chipped in at the last for birdie to take his tally for the day to 12, the duo were tied at the top on 34 points.

Erik van Rooyen, the 2021 champion, was one point back, with Frenchman Tom Vaillant leading the DP World Tour charge on 32 points after recording nine on day three.

"It was a nice round," said Vaillant. "Not easy. A lot of wind at the beginning.

"And then I mean, when you have time in the morning to think about the day it's never easy to start.

"So it's a good day. Very steady. That was the main goal.

"You have to play aggressive but to make birdies you have to putt for birdie. For me the main goal is giving me as many birdie putts as I can. I know if I'm putting well I'm going to make some. The main goal is this. I'm not going to change the game plan."

Dale Whitnell and Jason Scrivener were in the group on 28 points, one clear of Jacques Kruyswijk.
