Ryan Fox earns US PGA Championship berth with maiden PGA TOUR win

Ryan Fox and Sepp Straka both tasted victory on the PGA TOUR on Sunday.

Ryan Fox earned himself a place in the field at this week's US PGA Championship with a dramatic play-off victory at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic on the PGA TOUR.

The final two places at Quail Hollow Club were up for grabs at Dunes Golf and Beach Club and the Truist Championship in Philadelphia but with a host of established stars battling at the top of the leadeboard in the Signature event, the battle for a Major Championship start was taking place in South Carolina.

Kiwi Fox carded a closing 66 to set the clubhouse target at 15 under and while Mackenzie Hughes headed up the last with a one-shot lead, the Canadian hit a ragged tee-shot and a bogey sent him to extra holes with Fox and Harry Higgs.

The two North Americans both found the green with their second shots on the first trip back up the 18th and while Fox did not, he chipped in for birdie to pile on the pressure and moments later a maiden PGA TOUR title was his.

"Very rewarding,” said Fox, who earned his place on the PGA TOUR by becoming a dual member via the Race to Dubai in 2023.

“I haven’t transitioned probably as well as I would have liked over to the PGA TOUR. It was a tough year last year. I managed to just keep my card.

"It’s been a scratchy start this year as well. I always deep down felt like I could compete with the guys out here. Just haven’t been able to put it together. I was very happy to do it this week and give myself a chance on Sunday was nice again.”

Meanwhile, at Philadelphia Cricket Club, Sepp Straka held off the challenge of Ryder Cup team-mate and playing partner Shane Lowry to claim his second PGA TOUR title of the season.

The duo entered the final round wiith a three-shot advantage over the rest and it was Austrian Straka who took a one-shot lead up the last, with Justin Thomas two shots back in the clubhouse at 14 under.

Both men found the green on the 18th but Lowry was closest and when Straka left himself a tester for par, the Irishman had 27 feet to at least force a play-off.

A disappointing three-putt followed, however, and Lowry was left with a second runner-up finish of the season as both he and Straka entered the top ten on the Official World Golf Ranking.

"It's huge, the biggest win of my career," said Straka. "Yeah, just so grateful for the process and the whole team that kind of makes me play as well as I do.

"It's so great to be able to represent Austria. It's an exciting time right now. We've got about three weeks before Austria gets DP back, and just could not be more happy to be in the town where my parents met.

"Just so proud and so grateful to represent Austria."

The DP World Tour returns to Australia for the first time since 2021 for the Austrian Alpine Open presented by SalzburgerLand later this month. To buy tickets, click here.
