Robert MacIntyre enjoys 'brilliant' reception as he returns home after Ryder Cup

Robert MacIntyre enjoyed a "brilliant" reception as he returned to home soil at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship following last week's Ryder Cup heroics.

MacIntyre played a big part in Europe's famous away victory over the U.S. at Bethpage Black and was back in his native Scotland a matter of days later to shoot an opening 66 at Carnoustie Golf Links.

He received a warm welcome from his adoring fans and put on a show for them, chipping in for a birdie at the fifth hole before sending his approach on the tenth to within a few feet of the pin and knocking in the birdie putt.

The 29-year-old made a total of seven birdies and one bogey to finish the day on six under par, three shots off the lead.

He said: "It was brilliant. I've never seen the first tee like this at the Dunhill before. It was absolutely brilliant.

"So it was nice to put in a decent show today.

"This week I'm trying to enjoy myself. I'm trying not to be that stressed out about it, that overly focused, just take the rough with the smooth.

"I've got a good partner (Brett Overman), so we're trying to have fun out there, and it was a decent start.

"The energy levels are quite low. It's difficult. But you've just got to try and manage it, have a few good things in a round.

"You've just got to enjoy yourself as much as you can. I don't know if I'll enjoy myself over the next two days with the weather, but we'll see what we can do."

MacIntyre's Europe team-mate Tommy Fleetwood was one shot further back after his 67 at Carnoustie and said: "I played nice actually. I got on a really nice run in the middle of the round there on the back nine.

"And then even at the end, great putts coming in. I would have loved a couple more to have dropped, but I think five under today was a nice score.

"It was beautiful conditions. Scoring is very good on the leaderboard, but I'll take it."
