The US President, UK Prime Minister and Scotland’s First Minister gathered at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen ahead of the venue hosting a unique fortnight of back-to-back European Tour Group events.
This week, Trump International Golf Links welcomes the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship Hosted by Colin Montgomerie for the third consecutive year on the Legends Tour. That will be followed next week by the Nexo Championship, the penultimate event in the DP World Tour’s Closing Swing.
Both tournaments will be played on the Old Course at Trump International Golf Links, but President Trump ended his four day visit to Scotland on Tuesday by officially opening the recently constructed ‘New Course’ at the venue.
He spoke to an invited crowd of distinguished guests on the first tee, before hitting the ceremonial opening tee shot. The President then played in a fourball alongside his son Eric and Legends Tour players Paul McGinley and Rich Beem.
Earlier, European Tour Chief Executive Guy Kinnings had also addressed the guests which featured more than 100 members of the media from the UK and the US, including the travelling White House press corps.
“As you can see from the illustrious guests who are gathered here today, this is a significant occasion,” said Kinnings, who had joined the three leaders, Montgomerie and a small group of other guests at a dinner on Monday night.
“For us to have the President of the United States, the First Minister of Scotland, and yesterday the Prime Minister, all here together, shines a wonderful light on our sport and it is fitting that we do so here in Scotland, the Home of Golf.
“Their presence is validation of the appeal of golf, both as a sport but also as an industry.”
The Staysure PGA Seniors Championship Hosted by Colin Montgomerie begins on Thursday, while the Nexo Championship takes place from Thursday August 7 to Sunday August 10.
