John Catlin on a high after realising Masters dream as he targets more success at Grand Final

Only a win at the Grand Final mathematically guarantees John Catlin a DP World Tour card for the 2027 season, but he comes into the assignment on an unquestionable high.

The American won the Link Hong Kong Open, which will return to the DP World Tour schedule next year as a co-sanctioned event with the Asian Tour, on Sunday for the 16th professional title of his career.

It was his second title of the year, following victory on the HotelPlanner Tour at the English Open at the end of a mammoth seven-hole play-off in June.

At the time, he rose to 18th in the HotelPlanner Tour's season-long Rankings but he has since recorded just one top ten in his subsequent nine starts and has fallen to 41st.

But despite the long-haul travel to make his way from Asia to Europe and Club de Golf Alcanada for his Grand Final debut, the 35-year-old is feeling upbeat as he looks to ride a wave of positivity.

"It is always nice when you get to tee it up and you have just won the previous week," he said.

"Especially around a course like that that I have known for so long to finally get the job done on that course was pretty special.

"I am getting a feel for this track [Club de Golf Alcanada] and I like it. It is really cool, with a lot of hills.

"I am glad I am getting in a practice round. It wouldn't be a course that I'd want to go in blind but I am feeling pretty good. I feel like it is going to be a good week."

His victory in Hong Kong was his sixth in a national open, following on from similar previous triumphs in Ireland and Austria on the DP World Tour, and in England on the HotelPlanner Tour along with wins on the Asian Tour in Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

A final-round six-under-par 64 to claim a five-shot win in Hong Kong also notably earned Catlin an invite to next year's Masters Tournament and The Open.

This followed an announcement last year by Augusta National Golf Club and The R&A to reward the winners of select national opens.

“It still hasn’t quite sunk in," reflected Catlin on joining the likes of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Colin Montgomerie, Pádraig Harrington and Bernhard Langer among past event winners.

"It is pretty surreal. If someone would have told me that I would have six national open wins, I would probably not have believed them so to have it actually happen is something truly special.

"Those events just mean a little bit more. You look at the past champions. That was the 65th Hong Kong Open so it obviously has a long-standing tradition.

"To have your name alongside some of the greats of the game is something I will always cherish."

While Catlin has played at The Open on four prior occasions, finishing tied 16th at Royal Troon in 2024, he has punched his ticket for the Masters for the first time and one of golf's most renowned venues.

"I have dreamt of playing the Masters since I was four or five years old," he said. "It's a fulfillment of a lot of hard work.

"To get a chance to play at Augusta is something I have always wanted to do. Hopefully I can play well and give myself a chance to win. That's why we are going.

"The Open is amazing. It will be my fifth Open Championship, second time playing at St Andrews. Any time you get to play the Open Championship... it is such an amazing event.

"The fans are great, the golf courses are awesome. Links golf is such a different challenge, all of a sudden you can use the ground a bit more.

"St Andrews obviously has history, everybody knows the course. It is crazy when you play it for The Open, it is so firm [and] fast, you really have to be in control of your ball and then you can deal with the elements as well. Both those opportunities are amazing."
