This year sees Alfred Dunhill celebrate 40 years hosting events at the Home of Golf.
Starting with the Alfred Dunhill Cup in 1985 and since 2001 the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the luxury brand has become synonymous with golf's most famous venue.
Here, we take a look at some memorable moments from down the years.
1985 - Seve comes to town
The late, great Seve Ballesteros will always have a special place in the hearts of those at St Andrews foillowing his 1984 Open Championship victory and 12 months later he returned representing Spain in the inaugural Dunhill Cup. A three-man team event, Ballesteros, José María Cañizares and Manuel Piñero easily swept aside Nigeria in the first round before falling to Wales in the quarter-finals. The Australian trio of Greg Norman, David Graham and Graham Marsh would go on to be the first winners of the cup.
1998 - A great in the making
Tiger Woods had stunned the world with his record Masters win 18 months earlier and while he had not added to his Major tally - yet - there was much excitement as he arrived at St Andrews as World Number One. His team with John Daly and great friend Mark O'Meara stormed through the group stages taking 8½ points from nine matches but were stunned by Spain in the semi-finals. Wooods would establish a love affair with St Andews, however, winning the Claret Jug over the Old Course in 2000 and 2005 for two of his 15 Majors.
2001 - A new era
As a new millennium dawned, the professional team event gave way to the tournament we see today, with 72 holes of individual stroke play and a pro-am team event. The locals were sent home happy as Scot Paul Lawrie took the trophy, with Scotsmen winning three of the first five, although Colin Montgomerie's victory in 2005 was the latest by a home hope. Brett Rumford and Chris Peacock took the team trophy.
2003 - Triumph for the Torrances
While the team event brings people from the worlds of business and celebrity to St Andrews, it is also a chance for families to play together. In 2003, DP World Tour great Sam Torrance teamed up with son Daniel and the duo took home team honours. "Because he's my son I'm full of pride but even taking that into account, what he did this week was incredible," said Sam.
2021 - Breaking new ground
In 2021 we had our first female winner as Maeve Danaher won the team event alongside 2011 individual champion Michael Hoey. For Danaher - then a 22-handicap left hander who putts right handed - the victory not only gave her bragging rights over husband Gerry McManus, who finished fifth alongside Shane Lowry, but also continued a proud family record in the team event. Gerry's brother JP is a two time winner, while JP's son Kieran has surpassed his father with a trio of wins. "It is absolutely amazing to win this competition in such an exciting finish and I am especially happy for Michael," said Danaher. "He is an absolute rock, he’s fantastic."
2023 - Fitzpatricks do the double
Fresh off Ryder Cup victory in Rome, Matt Fitzpatrick showed no signs of fatigue as he took the title but the 2022 U.S. Open admitted it was team glory alongside mum Sue which he was after. The duo duly romped to a five-shot win and Matt could not be happier. "Even with all my wins, aside from a Major, you forget about them in the future," he said. "You'll always remember the one that you won with your mum, so it doesn't get better than that. She's been wanting to play all year and she's been looking forward to it. To go out there and play as well as you did and as well as I did as well, it's amazing to win together."
2024 - Hat-trick Hatton
Tyrrell Hattton began a love affair with the event iin 2016 when he lifted the trophy and he followed it with another victory the following year. Two runner-up finishes followed in 2018 and 2021 before he won again 12 months ago to go past two-time winner Pádraig Harrington. "It feels good. It's actually the first tournament I have won with my dad here, it means a lot and to do it at the Home of Golf is really special," Hatton said. "I'm trying not to cry to be honest, I'm a bit lost for words."
