Volvo China Open - Day two digest

Haotong Li entertains the home crowd, Eugenio Chacarra enjoys a birdie blitz and Ewen Ferguson goes pin-seeking.

Everything you need to know from round two at Enhance Anting Golf Club.

Li shows Hao it's done

The home favourite got the Shanghai crowd on their feet by carding his lowest professional round in China. The 29-year-old began Friday's second round with a seven-shot deficit to overnight leader Tapio Pulkkanen, but six birdies and a brilliant eagle at the third catapulted himself to top spot, alongside Chacarra and the Finn, at ten under. "Everything seemed to go my way compared to yesterday," the Chinese said. "Just very pleased to see this result today. (My approach game) was very important. The greens were very soft compared to yesterday. I was as aggressive as usual and got my reward. It was a lot calmer. Almost no wind until the last few holes. It was a super calm day."

Chacarra's calm birdie blitz

The most recent winner on the DP World Tour in the field is Eugenio Chacarra and he continued his momentum at Enhance Anting Golf Club thanks to his birdie blitz. Starting the day at six under, he began his run at the fourth with an approach to six feet and then added another at the par-three fifth with a lengthy putt. The Spaniard completed his hat-trick at the sixth - one of the toughest holes on the course - from 15 feet before dialling to eight feet at the seven to join Li at the summit. A bogey at the ninth saw him slip back, but another lengthy birdie putt at the 16th hauled him back into co-leadership.

Don't quack like a duck, soar like an eagle

Another Chinese player who was shining in Shanghai was Zecheng ‘Marty’ Dou. The 28-year-old endured a roller coaster first round to sit at one under, but he hit a blemish-free 65 on Friday to surge into contention. Dou celebrated two eagles - at the third and the last - along with two birdies to climb up to seven under, three adrift of leaders Li, Pulkannen and Chacarra."Those two eagles were very nice to have," he said. "Overall, just a really solid round. Not a whole lot of mistakes, very happy with it. The one on 18 (was my favourite) because I bogeyed it yesterday. I really want to win in my home country, it’s been about ten years since my last one in China. It would be really pleasing to have. There’s two more days and really good players out here. I just have to work my way through and if I do happen to get lucky enough to win, I’ll be thinking from there."

Ferguson hits the pin after spinning one in

How is your luck, Ewen Ferguson? A superb approach deserves so much better.

Naidoo in disbelief with birdie putt

The golfing gods were not with South African Dylan Naidoo during his first two rounds in Shanghai, and he could not believe his magnificent birdie putt at the 16th found the hole from downtown. What a putt!
